Is maith liom Gaeilge!

In translation.... I like Irish!

The Mercyhurst students are taking an Irish Language and Culture class at Waterford Institute of Technology every Tuesday. We had our first lecture and already learned how to have a conversation in Gaelic! Many people think Gaelic is a dead language, however we have learned that it is not at all. It is mainly only spoken as the primary language in the West, but students all over Ireland are required to learn it during every year of schooling. Gaelic, or "Irish" as they call it, was influenced by Latin, French, Scandinavian, and English. It is nothing like I have heard before so this may be a difficult class. Below are a few phrases we have learned so far!

Dia duit - Hello
Conas ata tu? - How are you?
go brea - Grand
Cad is ainm duit? - What is your name?
Deas bualadh leat - Nice to meet you
Go raibh maith agat - Thank you
Slan - Goodbye

P.S. Those words are pronounced completely different than they are written!
